Ah, Josie Silver knows how to pull at your heart strings. It is one of those books where certain chapters will actually make you tear up. I’ll openly admit that there was a few chapters that got me, along with a few tears shed at the end. ALL THE FEELS.
This book has been on my radar for some time. It’s one-part mystery, one-part ‘coming-of-age’. It begins with Kya, known as “Marsh Girl”, in 1952. A young girl who is slowly deserted by all her family to be left with her drunken, abusive father. The mystery element explores a murder scene, where sheriffs find Chase Andrews in 1969.
From the first few pages of the book, you can tell that Kya is a complex character. Yet, I think you can see the determination in her character from the start. As the book spans across 17 years, the reader is present for Kya’s life journey, from childhood to maturity.
‘Self-care Sunday’ tends to be associated with an extensive skincare routine, a face mask, all the general pampering….well for me, it tends to be starting to read a book in the morning, realising I can’t stop reading it and 4/5 hours later, I’ve finished the book. I love a paperback but having a Kindle means I’ve got a personal library on the go.

I’m not sure which month has felt weirder this year – April or May? Let me know what you think.
It’s the beginning of June now and I’d like to define this time as the ‘Lockdown Limbo’. The rules are easing and some days, I think that there might be light at the end of this tunnel. But it’s tough, especially from a mental health/well being perspective – we all cope differently with this HUGE element of change. I hate uncertainty at the best of times so this ‘lockdown limbo’ is exacerbating that x100. Here are a few ways (somewhat trivial) that I’m utilising to help ease how I feel.
