Let’s get International Women’s Day booked in the diary, its the 8th March every year and not a day to forget. It’s time for us to appreciate and celebrate the achievements of all the women in our lives. This years theme is #EachForEqual, celebrating the changes that have been made in the working world, but also inspiring us all to look forward to the future of women’s rights across the globe.
THE CHANGES THAT WE CAN CELEBRATE
- Flexible working enables employees to work the hours that suit their lifestyle, which can improve work-life balance, resulting in greater productivity and employee engagement – benefits that the employer can reap.
- Gender balance in senior positions is improving; this week Unilever announced that 50% of management are women, but it has taken 10 years to get to this point.
- Finland support equal parental leave, there is legislation to ensure both working parents receive the same treatment. The UK government is now facing pressure to evaluate current laws.
WHAT DOES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MEAN TO ME?
To me, it means recognising every achievement and success of the women in your life. It’s a day to remind us to cheer each other on from the sidelines, empower each other to strive for better, to follow our dreams. IWD is the yearly reminder that we can celebrate the progress but we still need to fight for equality overall.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED IN INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2020
SUPPORT BRAND INITIATIVES
THE BODY SHOP are partnering with Plan International, donating £50,000 to support their work towards equal rights in the UK and Ireland. But 95% of their products contain ingredients from their own Community Trade programme, in place to support female communities across the world. If you haven’t shopped at The Body Shop before, you need to!
PAPIER have created a collection of gemstone-inspired stationary with Monica Vinader – 11% of each sale will be donated to Women for Women International’s work, helping women survivors of war. These notebooks are stunning, each gemstone is used with meaning – this charity collection is definitely one to check out.
International Women’s Day have events that are panning across this week, so we haven’t missed out yet. The IWD website has plenty of information for how you can get involved; events, collaborations, careers – you name it. Tailor the search based on where you live and you’ll see whats happening – next year, I’m going to check the website much earlier next time to see the events available; there’s plenty in Birmingham that I could have gone to.
This blog post is dedicated to every woman I know; we all have our own achievements, take life at our own pace but will continue to strive for change to occur across the globe. You are all INCREDIBLE!
